If you’ve been on the recovery road for any length of time, then you probably know that addiction recovery requires time, hard work, focus, and dedication. If you’re new to recovery or are thinking about quitting drinking or taking drugs, you may have some hesitation or anxiety around the thought. Not knowing what to expect at a treatment centre can make some people nervous.
But addiction recovery doesn’t have to be scary. The more you learn about the structure, support, and even recovery excursions offered at rehabs, the more comfortable you’ll feel.
One thing is for sure.
Addiction recovery doesn’t have to be all work and no play.
In fact, recovery inside and outside of rehab should involve some downtime for recreational activities and/or excursions. To be able to let loose, enjoy some adventure, and experience interesting activities can have a wonderful impact on your recovery and attitude.
Some people think recovery or treatment might be boring. They think that the only way to have fun or adventure is if they are drinking or using their drug of choice.
This is simply not true.
There are many ways to have fun, experience adventure, and participate in excursions when you’re committed to sobriety.
Life is what you make it, and though you may not always feel like engaging in activities, doing so regularly can benefit your recovery greatly.
Here at Into Action Recovery, we introduce clients to various recreational activities and excursions to solidify and strengthen their recovery and overall well-being. Getting out in the community engaging in activities promotes healthy socialization, routine, and trust.
Our team chooses the types of community outings based on individual and community needs. As much as we believe in-house treatment is helpful, we also believe that growth can occur outside of the treatment centre. And, you’ll have the opportunity to use some of the socialization skills learned inside treatment while you’re participating in the activities.
It’s not uncommon for those in active addiction to find themselves isolating from family, friends, and community. By the time they get to treatment, they can have serious reservations about engaging with people they don’t know. Does this sound like you? Are you hesitant to open up and share with others in a recovery program?
Social anxiety may be common, but it’s treatable. We feel that part of the healing and recovery process should involve helping you become more comfortable engaging in social groups. By getting out in the community at least once a week to enjoy some fun activities, you’ll be able to ease back into socialization with the support of professionals by your side.
You can take it at your pace though. We’ll never require you to do something that you’re just not comfortable with. We may gently encourage you, but never force you to engage in the excursions.
We offer various social activities during the week and weekends, including:
Other excursions may be added to the list as we see fit.
Getting out in the community to enjoy activities can get your mind off things that tend to bring you down. Whether it’s hiking a trail in nature or getting lost in a captivating movie at the theatre, it’ll do you good to just enjoy the present moment allowing yourself to let go and be present.
It’s important to begin experiencing life as fun – sober!
Whereas you may have associated fun with drinking or partying before, now you have the opportunity to rewire your brain into associating sobriety with fun! As you allow yourself to enjoy new activities or excursions, you empower yourself in ways that will help you sustain your sobriety.
Rehab excursions can help you see that recovery can be far more exciting than you may have thought. We believe life is what you make it, and it can be exciting and rewarding even if you’re sober.
We’re here to help you prepare for a new life outside of rehab clean, sober, and with skillsets that add value to your life on all levels. Regular time engaging in outdoor or community activities can help you be more prepared to continue with such activities when you return home.
